Description of the role

The aim of this role is to enhance and improve the quality of the service user’s stay whilst in hospital by providing impartial, empathic companionship with the aim of helping to reduce stress, social isolation and loneliness.

We would like the volunteer to provide informal support to inpatients by either talking or facilitating appropriate activities on the ward, i.e. doing arts and crafts, playing games on a 1:1 basis like air hockey, table tennis or playing cards or any other particular appropriate skills that the volunteer may have.

We are looking for:

  • Someone who has an interest in helping to enhance and improve the quality of the service user’s stay whilst in our inpatient adult mental health hospital by providing impartial, empathic companionship with the aim of helping to reduce stress, social isolation and loneliness
  • They also need to be reliable and friendly
  • Motivated to help and support others and are empathetic and enthusiastic
  • They need to have excellent communication skills, be able to work on their own initiative (support would be available) and who would be able to recognise an escalating situation

Practical Considerations

  • We are looking for expressions of interest for this role. This role would be ideal if you are planning on a career in mental health.
  • We would pay travel expenses from home address to volunteer placement.

When is the opportunity available?

We would really like at least a 6 month weekly commitment (preferably for up to 3 hours a week)

We deliver mental health and learning disability services across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. We also run community hospitals, community nursing, services for children and families, specialist dental and sexual health services in Worcestershire.
