Volunteer stories: Rob

Robert's Story

I really enjoy working as a volunteer driver for Bromsgrove Urban and Rural Transport community minibus (BURT). Lots of people who live in rural areas in our local community just wouldn’t be able to get out and about without BURT and I just like to think that as I have the time now I’m retired, I can play my part in giving something back to the community.

In my professional life I worked for Royal Mail and as an on call firefighter, so my work has always involved working in a team and developing people skills. I’m an experienced driver and like meeting people, so after seeing the advert for minibus volunteer driver in the local paper, I decided to give it a go.

Now I have a real sense of satisfaction through meeting people and getting to know the regular passengers. They’re really good company and knowing that I’ve made a difference to their day keeps me motivated in my volunteer role. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has the driving ability and the willingness to help others.
