Health Walk Leader/Helper

Walking for Health (Bromsgrove and Redditch)

Description of the role

We are looking for volunteers to help with our health walks. You will be supplied with 2 hours of training.

Walks can be set up at a time/day and location to fit in with the volunteer’s lifestyle. The commitment would be for 1 hour a week, and this can also be shared with other walk leaders in the area.

You do not need to be a fast walker. Walks can average several miles, but we need leaders that are willing to walk not only at the front but also middle and back where they will support slower walkers. The walks can be around an hour if at the back.

Practical Considerations

  • We need regular commitment at your chosen location, but it does not need to be every week.

Any specific requirements

  • Any additional requirements will be discussed with you and the organisation.

Where is the opportunity based?

This opportunity is across Bromsgrove and Redditch.

When is the opportunity available?

Volunteering days available to be discussed between you and the organisation.

About the organisation

Regular “Walks for Health” in Redditch and Bromsgrove are organised by the local council. The walks tend to last 30mins to an hour, and are a way for people to:

– Have Fun!

Explore your area, get out into the fresh air, meet new people.

– Stay Healthy!

Regular brisk walking can help reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, improve blood cholesterol levels and help control diabetes.

– Keep fit!

Walking is an ideal form of exercise. Regular walking helps keep bones and joints healthy. A brisk walk can help you lose weight.

In Redditch, one of the walks takes place at the 900-acre Arrow Valley Country Park – the largest area of open space in Redditch – and it’s not just a beautiful environment, it’s packed full of things to see and do.

The park is set over 2.5 miles of countryside, between Forge Mill Needle Museum, the protected ancient monument of medieval Bordesley Abbey and the Abbey Stadium to the north and Washford Mill to the south. The River Arrow meanders through it and together with the 29-acre Arrow Valley Lake there are excellent wildlife habitats as well as great walks and activities.

At the heart of the park is the lakeside Arrow Valley Visitor Centre, which houses a café with panoramic views across the water as well as function and conference facilities, fishing, water sports and other activities, as well as toilets.

The park was created in the 1970s by the Redditch Development Corporation which built Redditch new town and continues to be a great asset for the community.

Walks are also available in the Bromsgrove district.
