Drop In Centre Activity and Refreshment Volunteer

Maggs Day Centre

Description of the role

We are seeking volunteers for our new Redditch Town Centre harm reduction and outreach drop in service. Our volunteers will welcome our clients, make drinks, have a chat, run activities which might be based around their hobbies or interests. We would really value a Polish speaking volunteer within the team to enable us to offer the most effective support for those where language might be a barrier to them accessing services.

Our wonderful team of volunteers who currently work across Worcester are from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some are building confidence to return to work, some are building experience in order to change career or build a career in our sector. Others have some spare time and and interest in the challenges faced by those who are experiencing homelessness and all that brings to their lives.

  • You will be kind, compassionate, fun and reliable.
  • Most of our volunteers have no previous experience in our sector and none is required. We need volunteers who are people orientated and hold no judgement over those we work with.

Practical Considerations

We are currently based in a town centre church building with good access, parking and within easy walking distance of local transport. Our friendly team will always be present to support and encourage you. We offer up to £10.00 per day expenses for travel and parking. Training is also available and we actively encourage our volunteers to access any training opportunities staff might be involved with where relevant to their role.

About the organisation

Maggs was founded in 1984 after a homeless man died after years of sleeping rough on the streets in Worcester. Five members of the local church came together in unity to provide sanctuary for the homeless to try to prevent further deaths among local homeless people. They were provided with a small church in Deansway, which, nearly 40 years later, is still the definitive Maggs Day Centre and has the same ethos to this day.

Our goal is not just to support rough sleepers in their situation, but to help them to make the changes necessary for them to change their lifestyle, by dealing with the issues that hold them back, like lack of confidence, substance abuse, or poor health, so that they can access permanent housing and return to a conventional lifestyle off the streets.
