Trustee

Bromsgrove and Redditch Network

Description of the role

BARN is a charity that has been supporting communities across Bromsgrove and Redditch for over 25 years. We’re a network of charities and community groups, run the local Volunteer Centre, and support other community projects.

We’re looking for people to join our Board of Trustees to bring their own knowledge to the governance of the charity. If you know about policies, procedures, financial management and strategic planning they are useful skills, but we’re also open to people with different experiences they can bring to the table – we value the variety of different knowledge and skills with the trustees. You do not need to have any trustee experience yourself, we will support you through that journey.

  • Trustees are responsible for the overall governance of the charity, making sure the work we do aligns with our core mission and values.
  • They approve the annual budget each year, and monitor progress against predictions.
  • They oversee a Risk Register, looking at risks on the horizon, and what the charity can do to mitigate them.
  • Policies and procedures are reviewed regularly by the trustees, and updated when necessary.
  • Sub groups are delegated with specific remits, such as the BURT community minibus or premises.

Practical Considerations

Board meetings may take place in either Bromsgrove or Redditch at different venues (although currently more often in Redditch).

Board meetings are hybrid, so can be joined remotely. Face to face attendance is encouraged though, and trustees would be expected to attend a reasonable amount of face to face.

In between meetings decisions are often made via email.

Any specific requirements

  • Must be 18 or over.

Where is the opportunity based?

BARN is currently based in temporary offices in Redditch following the closure of Community House, its previous home. Board meetings are usually held in community venues in Redditch.

When is the opportunity available?

Board meetings happen every two or three months, and are usually a couple of hours. There are additional sub groups covering different subjects or projects which meet as needed (often virtually) – trustees can choose to join these too.

About the organisation

We’re a network that’s been supporting volunteers and community organisations across Bromsgrove and Redditch for over 25 years.

We’re the voice of the voluntary sector, support local communities, and help with networking, information, funding, governance and volunteering. We’re the local Council for Voluntary Service and run the Volunteer Centre for Bromsgrove and Redditch. We run community projects too, like the BURT community minibus across Bromsgrove District and our Redditch Community Builder.
