Driver

BURT (Bromsgrove Urban and Rural Transport)

Description of the role

If you enjoy driving and supporting people then we need your help!

Drivers are needed for our minibus to assist residents in Bromsgrove – helping them to make essential journeys and providing any appropriate assistance (e.g. helping them on and off the bus) where they can’t get around by any other means.

“If it wasn’t for BURT bus they [the passengers] wouldn’t be able to go to the club. It enables them to get out each week and have some fun. It’s a good system especially for the elderly. It’s brilliant.”

“Thanks for what you do, you’re a real benefit. You’re better than the taxis. Often they won’t wait but I really appreciate what you do.”

We are looking for someone friendly and willing to help others, with a full, clean driving licence (if it includes category D1 that’s even better).

Practical Considerations

  • Minimum age of 21. Some local knowledge of roads in and around Bromsgrove would be useful but not essential.
  • Some basic day to day checks of the minibus will be required (for example, checking the tyre pressure, fuel, oil levels etc).
  • We will arrange for you to have an enhanced DBS check (which will be free to you, and we will also send you on minibus driving and wheelchair transportation courses).
  • A reasonable level of fitness is required for getting in and out of the vehicle, assisting passengers and handling/securing wheelchairs.
  • If you passed your driving test before 1997 then you should automatically have category D1 on your licence. The D1 category is automatically removed at 70 years old but can be extended until 73 subject to a medical check.

Any specific requirements

  • A D1 on your drivers licence is preferred but not essential.
  • Minimum age to apply is 21.

Where is the opportunity based?

The minibus is based in central Bromsgrove, and drives across the District.

When is the opportunity available?

This would be discussed between the organisation and the volunteer.
